Gerontology and geriatrics have a long history in Hungary. In 1954, in the middle of the 20th century, the Gerontology Committee was established at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, followed by the Gerontology Section of the Biological Society in 1958. After these achievements, at the beginning of the millennium the Department of Gerontology was established at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Debrecen, headed by Dr. habil Marianna Móré. The Department has several activities beyond teaching, one of which is the management of the Hungarian Journal of Gerontology, which since 2009 has provided the opportunity to publish in Hungarian and English in the field of gerontology. Also linked to the work of the journal, since 2007 the Gerontology Days have provided an opportunity to study new research in the field, both through an international conference and through continuing professional development courses, every autumn. The organisation of the Academy for the Elderly also plays a prominent role in the life of the Department, with two programmes taking place in two locations each semester, in Nyíregyháza and Szolnok. |
