Social work BA
Due to its nature, the training of social professionals requires a large amount of practice. It is especially true for the Bachelor’s program where students acquire the competencies needed for their job.
The necessary practical knowledge is gained throughout the field practice where the students combine their theoretical knowledge, skills, and the values of the profession. Our institution and its practical locations serve the same purposes: to train professionals who are competent in their work and ready to act; have a system approach; recognize needs and social problems; and are able to use the tools and methods of social work when they act in the client’s interest.
As part of the social work training, the field practice provides students with applicable skills, and shows them the significance of social work values such as human rights, human dignity and social justice. Students can have a closer look at deficit needs, the services that focus on problem management and prevention, the target groups as well as different life situations. The field practice serves as a compass for the students which will help them to find focus, will influence their mindset, acts and values along the path to master the profession. We consider it our responsibility to give them the best compass and teach them how to use it.
At bachelor level, 40 percent of the lessons are practical ones and skill development in order to prepare students for the field practice. The aim of the core practice is to introduce the function and tasks of social services to the students. The field teacher shows the services from several aspects while students can widen their knowledge and gain first-hand experience. The core practice leads the students into the world of social work where no matter how diverse the people, life situations, problems and even the answers are, the solutions offered by social will work.
In the first phase of the practice, which lays the ground, the students study the organizational structure, functions and tasks of the institutions providing social and child protection services; the methods of social work; as well as the groups using these services. The aim of the seminars that follow the visit to the setting is to form the students’ structural thinking and shape their professional identity. In this phase they get to know with different target groups of social work, several applied methods and the social services that aim to satisfy the clients’ needs. At the settings trainees are put into small groups of 5-10. It is a significant phase since the second phase, knowledge deepening, is based on the knowledge gained on target groups, services and methods.
The deepening phase includes subjects that provide further knowledge on the profession. The settings of the out-of-school practice are chosen from a list by the students. Here they learn the institutions’ professional tasks; their organizational and operational structure; the client circle; the service strategy and all the related institutions providing social services. The field teacher allocates certain part of tasks to the students in order to apply the acquired methods in practice, deepen their knowledge and improve their skills. Since it is an individual practice, 1-2 students work together with the field teacher. All these activities contribute to the one-semester long comprehensive practice.
In the integrative phase, which is the one-semester long practice, the students work in full-time in one of the practice settings. This is the phase when students are expected to integrate their theoretical and practical knowledge, develop their professional skills and show their understanding of the ethics of social work. Moreover this is the most suitable phase to apply their professional competencies. The field teacher gradually lets the students do their work partly independently at first, and later completely independently.
The comprehensive professional practice is a suitable opportunity for students to obtain professional knowledge; experience how methods are applied in services; and gain valuable practice and experience in a helping profession.
In the integrated field work students’ theoretical and practical knowledge and skills are combined, which they learn to apply both in theory and practice.
Health Social Work Master Programme
The training lies on the border of health and social professions, basically inter-disciplinary, where both health services and social sciences are taught. During the programme the students acquire the knowledge, skills and competencies of the profession in the field work. The training focuses on field practice for 4 semesters, and it is spent at settings of health social work such as hospitals or institutions of rehabilitation, where disabled, psychiatric patients, patients with mental problems, addicts, old people and the homeless are provided treatments.
The field teacher is a professional who is working in any of these institutions, teaches students on the spot, helps them with the practice work, and discusses cases with the students during seminars.
In the first semester students take part in preparatory field work in practice settings, where they study the services, the clients and the applied methods provided by the institution. After the field work they take part in seminars that aim to widen their knowledge on the operation of the institution, the problems of the clients, the methods of interventions and services highlighted from several aspects.
In the second semester students participate in an intensifying type of field work, where students can gain a wider aspect of the professional work in one of the settings of health social work under the guidance of field teachers. They carry out the tasks independently.
In the third semester students continue the intensifying field work, they obtain valuable experiences in health social work in areas such as community care, prevention, rehabilitation, and in events and services which improve life quality and realize equal opportunities. The seminars are held in small groups, where the problems of clients, the applied methods and services are discussed, and the competencies of health social work are also defined.
In the fourth semester students take part in a comprehensive field practice, which aims to integrate theory and practice; develop professional skills and competencies in practice; and apply professional methods. Students deal with the clients of health social work directly while provide services, apply the methods of social work, and solve problems.
In addition to the comprehensive field practice at the settings, students discuss and process their professional experiences in the seminars. The methods that help to process their experience are the following: writing records in the fieldwork diary, giving oral presentations, writing essays, working from professional literature and discussing cases.
