Department of Nursing and Midwifery

The Department of Nursing, as the predecessor of Department of Nursing Science, was established on 1 April 2000 and coordinated by Dr. Tünde Szabó. The contemporary Department of Nursing Science at our Faculty was formed in 2013 under the leadership of Dr Attila Sárváry. The staffs of the department are professionals of nursing and health sciences and represent different fields of nursing sciences such as teaching nursing, researches into nursing, clinic nursing, acute and chronic nursing.

Main subjects at Nursing and Patient Care Paramedic specialization
The staff members of the department take part in teaching the theory and practice of subjects in connection with Nursing, Care, Rehabilitation and Researches into Nursing both in the Bachelor and Master programmes Our students get to know with and learn the ethical standards of nursing; and acquire the theoretical and practical bases, policies and protocols of nursing as well as specialized nursing. Together with the settings we work out the schedule for our students’ professional practice.
Other subjects
The staff is also involved in teaching the theory and practice of subjects which are connected to Public Health, Health Promotion and Pedagogy.

Researches
  1. Examining the career choice and migration attitudes of health care students and health professionals; Needs and objectives of human resource planning; Health condition of nurses.
  2. Quality examination of care provided for patients with chronic diseases; Issues of home care and hospice care.
  3. Health behaviour, Assessing the health condition of young people, minorities (mainly Roma people) and migrants.
Projects
 
The staff members took part in the establishment of ETNE (European Transcultural Nursing Association) in 2005. Our department has joined several international projects thank to the institution’s wide international relationship. The most important ones are:
  • – Universities of five countries (Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey) which provide nursing training have started a joint research. Its topic is the situation of nurses in the context of EU expectations and WHO guidelines.
  • – In the frame of ETNA the department has taken part in researching the nursing characteristics of countries with different cultures since 2005. The Faculty of Health organized a Summer University on this topic in 2006 where there were professionals from six countries.
  • – A comprehensive research, supported by EU, called ‘Toward Active Old Age’ was carried out with four countries where the Hungarian partner was the Nursing Department of the University of Debrecen. (FIN-01-B-F-NT-126629).
  • – A ProDomo LLP, supported by EU, was implemented with six countries between 2009-2011 with the title of ’Transfer of Accreditation Best Practice for At-home Care Service - the Innovative Aspects Integrated by the Cooperative Work of the Partnership’ (LLP-LDV/TOI/09/IT/0456) The partner countries were: Spain, Germany, Slovenia, Great-Britain, Italy and Hungary represented by the University of Debrecen Faculty of Health.
  • – A HUSKROUA project was implemented from 2012 to 2013, when the University of Debrecen collaborated with the Uzhgorod University with the aim to study the social and health care systems and work out health promotion programs.

Conference There are annual conferences for nurses and midwives which are organized by our three partner universities such as University of South Bohemia, Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, University of Rzeszów.
Intensive programs Lecturers of the department and nurse students regularly join intensive programs in the frame of Erasmus+ organized either at our Faculty or at other institutions’ faculties.

National and International Relations
We have Erasmus Life Long Learning cooperation agreement with several international partner institutions, so our students and teachers can take part in mobility and intensive programs. Our department organized two ENNE intensive programmes in 2011 and 2013 focussing on case studies and Problem Based Learning.
The cooperation agreements with our foreign partners make it possible for students to spend their professional practice in one of the partner institutions, for which they are awarded credits.
